Gulf Coast Groms Charging Competition in May
By Tommy Daniels
What a spectacular start to the the new contest season for a couple of local Gulf Coast groms. The weekend of May 11th saw the first contests of the 2012-2013 NSSA season opener. Fun surf in the waist/chest high greeted the contestants on Saturday and continued for Sunday as Contest # 2 got underway. Christian Daniels (AMI) went on to make 6 total finals in 3 separate divisions. Clinching a 2nd in Menehuene (12&u) both days and another 2nd both days in the boys open division (14&u). He also went on to grab a 4th and 6th place finish in the explorer boys division (14&u). Another Gulf coast grom fared well both days and nipped at Christian's heels the entire event. Plant City's Joey Putnal grabbed 3rd in the open Menehuene and open boys divisions both days.
This past weekend of May 18th saw the opener of the 21012-2113 ESA season opener. This time it was Plant City's Joey Putnal stroking out of the gates early. Joey went on to place 2nd in the menehuene division, but more impressive was his strong run in the open division. Surfing against men more that 3x his age, Joey went on to respectable 4th place finish once the spray had cleared. AMI's Christian Daniels faltered in the final of the menehuene division and came up short with a 5th place finish. Way to go groms. The entire GC is proud of you little rippers!
